Wish I liked this one. It was a non-union shoot, with major Hollywood character actors working for next to nothing. But the film doesn't work; nothing is adequately motivated. Hazel seems merely insane, he doesn't seem touched by zealotry or enthusiasm. I haven't read the O'Connor novel but this doesn't work as a movie. It left me cold.

When he starred in Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet, Leonard Whiting was stunningly good-looking. I'm sure I'm not the only woman who had to remind herself that he was only a child (age 17) at the time. One of the things that was disturbing about the pairing of the youthful stars was that in promoting the movie Olivia would appear on camera during interviews smoking a cigarette and drinking alcohol, even though she was only 14 or 15 at the time. One interviewer seemed shocked enough that he commented on the smoking. I have to believe that her actions probably violated some of the rules of the movie studio to which she was under contract. She struck me as a wild child who needed structure and discipline and had neither.
